from under the cork. comments from right out of the left field unusual and hard to find wines from the world of wine

Welcome,

This is an occasional page of comments from under the cork; right out of the left field.

Thought for the Month:

“The best kind of wine is that which is most pleasant to him who drinks it”

Pliny The Elder

"No, it's the wine someone else buys....."

Nigel the Younger

We have a very liberal policy at The Old Forge Wine Cellar. When we get sample bottles in for tasting they are prepared and then put on the kitchen table after lunch service for anyone to try. As our staff a rather a varied lot we get some great feedback but one we really liked recently was,

"It's like drinking a bonfire".

Now to be fair the bottle would retail at less than £5.00 inc VAT but it was not very impressive.

Names have been omitted to protect the innocent— but the wine has not made our provisional list for Wines for Under a Fiver; our budget priced wine site launching in the Spring.

We quite like this web site and thought you might also find it amusing.

Have you seen that the ancient Egyptians were into red wine?

However 'fit only for gods, kings and the higher ranks'.

Does that mean one had to be a god, king or of high rank or that the wine was so bad only they had the strength to drink it?

Read some more about it.

Most countries have, at the least, heavy fines for driving with even a small amount of alcohol in the blood-stream. In Uruguay however intoxification is a legal excuse for having an accident while driving.

Some quotes we were sent -

Mixing one's wines may be a mistake, but old and new wisdom mix admirably.
* Bertolt Brecht (topic: wisdom)

Something of vengeance I had tasted for the first time; as aromatic wine it seemed, on swallowing, warm and racy: its after-flavour, metallic and corroding, gave me a sensation as if I had been poisoned.

We would like to thank the mandarins of The Department of Culture, Media & Sport as reported in OLN for the following.

The crime of kidnapping an heiress has been included in the Licensing Act 2003....

Three offences have been added to the Act that prevent one from holding an alcohol licence.

  • Fraudulently abducted an heiress
  • Had sexual intercourse with a 'defective'.
  • Committed violence offences including arson.

So any heiress of the female gender who might appreciate sex with a violent defective should apply here.
